Alliance Supports Collaboration to Lower Prescription Drug Costs

Alliance for Aging Research applauds proposed legislative

compromise between lawmakers and pharmaceutical companies

to expand access to innovative therapies

Washington, D.C. – This week Senator Max Baucus (D-MT), Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, announced that drug manufacturers and lawmakers have struck a legislative compromise to reduce America's healthcare costs by $80 billion over the next several years. The agreement would commit drug companies to reducing the out-of-pocket costs that Medicare Part D participants incur while in the coverage gap.

Daniel Perry, executive director of the not-for-profit Alliance for Aging Research, issued this statement in support of the compromise:

"Many older Americans enrolled in Medicare Part D face daunting costs on prescription drugs while in the coverage gap, especially those who are managing multiple chronic conditions. By voluntarily reducing these costs, pharmaceutical companies will ensure that more seniors can afford access to the breakthrough treatments they need."

"Medicare Part D has provided millions of older Americans with prescription drug coverage they would otherwise not have. Many valuable and innovative therapies exist and many more are in the pipeline with significant potential to treat the diseases of aging. This agreement takes important steps to continue the success of the Medicare Part D program and will play an integral role in supporting the health and well being of older Americans and those who are disabled."

Alliance Urges Congress to follow Schrader’s Suit

Alliance for Aging Research Supports Rep. Schrader’s New Comparative Effectiveness Research Legislation

Washington, D.C. – On Tuesday, Rep. Kurt Schrader (D-OR), joined fellow New Democrat colleagues Rep. Ron Kind (D-WI) and Rep. Allyson Schwartz (D-PA), in introducing the Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER) Act of 2009 (H.R. 2502).

Daniel Perry, executive director of the Alliance for Aging Research, released the following statement in support of this new, patient-centered CER legislation:

“Comparative effectiveness research has the potential to better inform healthcare decision making and transform the treatment of disease for all Americans. Because of their complex health needs, older Americans will be disproportionately affected by the widespread use of additional research on what interventions are more effective for treating age-associated disease and conditions.”

Perry further states, “We must ensure that future comparative effectiveness research is designed in a way that recognizes diversity among patients that could impact clinical outcomes. As Americans age at an unprecedented rate, it is important to consider all factors that could affect how care is delivered to older patients. H.R. 2502 establishes a comprehensive framework that allows patient input into the decision-making process on what CER priorities should be pursued and how best to conduct the research, while streamlining patient and provider access to this crucial information.”

Urges Congress and the President to

Restore a National Commitment to Medical Research

Calls for at least a 7% increase in NIH funding for FY 2010

Washington, D.C. – More than 65 disease groups, not-for-profit patient advocacy organizations, and foundations urge Congress and President Obama to restore a national commitment to medical research on behalf of America’s aging population. In a report released today, the 2009 Task Force on Aging Research Funding calls for at least a 7% increase in funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in fiscal year (FY) 2010 to halt the erosion of the nation’s research base and facilitate medical discoveries to fight diseases and disabilities that disproportionately affect older Americans.

Over the last five years, federal funding for NIH has been stagnant and spending on medical research has declined by as much as 17%. The economic stimulus enacted by President Obama earlier this year gives NIH a substantial two-year infusion of resources, but it is only a temporary measure. Investments in medical research are especially crucial as the baby boom generation ages. If this population ages with the same risks of chronic health problems as today’s elderly, the healthcare burden in the U.S. will cripple an already fragile healthcare system.

“We need to keep our aging population healthier, more vital, and independent longer,” said Daniel Perry, executive director of the not-for-profit Alliance for Aging Research, which spearheaded the Task Force. “A financially healthy NIH is critical to a healthy U.S. economy, and to the health of its people,” Perry added.

Almost 70 national organizations contributed to and endorsed the report, which is being disseminated to Members of Congress and other policy makers. Since 1988, the Task Force Report has served as a tool to assist policy makers in establishing the funding levels necessary to advance biomedical research and improve the health of the aging populations.
